HERE’S YOUR CHANCE: DO YOU WANT CHANGE OR THE SAME?

October 31, 2007

Many of us have been doing  a lot of mouthing-off about needing change in the legislative system in Delaware.  We say we are  sick and tired of the same old crap, year after year. Well, here’s your chance to put your vote where your mouth is……THERE IS A SPECIAL ELECTION BETWEEN JOANNE CHRISTIAN AND BRUCE ENNIS IN THE 14th SENATORIAL DISTRICT, {TO FILL  SENATOR VAUGHN’S SEAT).    WE CAN ONLY HOPE THAT THE PROFRESSIVE THINKERS WILL PREVAIL.  WE’LL SEE IF THE “DEMAND  CHANGE”  TYPES ARE FOR REAL, OR JUST A LOT OF TRASH TALKERS. I hope they win.  You will note that,  except for this one sentence, the words “Republican” and “Democrat” will never appear in anything I write about the elections in this State.  The hell with “parties”; let’s talk people….it’s good PEOPLE, not parties, which we need in our legislature.  Prove it in this special election.  PLEASE!

The best digging that I’ve been able to come up with is the following.   JOANNE CHRISTIAN is in favor of: Open Government/Against Lobby Influence/ For Inspector General/ For Real Improvement in her field, Education/ Very much into human service issues/ Deeply involved in youth development programs….actucally DOING things in these fields, not just talking about them.

My knowledge of her opponent, BRUCE ENNIS, reveals that he is living proof that the regressive “Good Old Boy” mentality will be alive and well, and will thrive in the back row chair once occupied by Jim Vaughn, if Bruce Ennis wins.

As Dana Garrett pointed out lately in his blog, we can look for nothing new coming from Bruce Ennis.  I can verify that.  I’ve watched him only fairly closely, but, I don’t think he ever bucked his own party on anything.  He’s been pretty well inbedded in Bob Gilligan’s pocket on all issues.  This means he will be deeply in Thurman Adam’s pocket (the back pocket, of course, where he can be closer to the butt).  If Ennis wins, he will have to spend the first month cleaning out Vaughn’s desk draw filled with good legislative bills which are buried  under a mountain of cobwebs.  If Ennis wins, the Jim Vaughn mentality lives on.  It’s that simple.  He will bring over the same attitude as he had in the House of Representatives; following Gilligan’s positions:

NO REAL OPEN GOVERNMENT/ NO DEDICATION TO CHANGING EDUCATION/ CERTAINLY NO INSPECTOR GENERAL/ NO RECORD OF INVOLVEMENT IN YOUTH ISSUES OR HUMAN SERVICE ISSUES IN GENERAL.  Ennis is pretty much a lightweight when it comes to  changing anything.  He’ll cruise  along with his duel pension intact  (state police), and like virtually all of the ex-state police types in the legislature that I have seen over 30 year, he will define success was being about to stay afloat in a pool of mediocrity, and go-along-to-get-along, thereby becoming  a 20 year career do-nothing implant….voting against anything which will deviate from the existing system.  “Change” from the existing system is not the strong point of police thinking. I have known about 10 to 13 ex-state police persons in the legislature; none of them that I can rememer, actively strove to improve the system. In fact, Vaughn could have gotten a PhD  from Atilla Univerity, in stopping progress, and returning to whipping posts and hangings.  There is only one exception to my general opinion of policemen in the legislature, PETE SCHWARTZKOPF.  He’s different, progressive, bucked his on party on occasion, and stands on principle: voted for needle bill, strongly against John Atkins, against lobbyist influence, favors budget reform process, fights against the joint finance committee weaknesses, stands up for a lot of human service causes, and backs Inspector General bill, ONLY if it gets tougher and really does the job. I only have 72 hours to talk him  into moving into the 14th Senatorial District.

AT ANY RATE, HERE’S MY PICK FOR THE SPECIAL ELECTION SATURDAY. I’LL TAKE THE UNDERDOG,  JOANNE CHRISTIAN, FOR THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF PROGRESS, CHANGE, AND MEANINGFUL REFORM. How about YOU……who is your choice and WHY? And if you use the forbidden words “Republican or Democrat”, I’ll find a way to delete your response….NO PARTIES, ONLY PEOPLE

HEY DON’T FORGET–WEDNESDAY DEADLINE

October 29, 2007

Hopefully you know this, if you saw the News Journal Headline on Sunday….IF YOU ARE ALREADY REGISTERED TO VOTE, AND YOU WANT TO CHANGE PARTY AFFILIATION IN ORDER TO VOTE IN THE FEBRUARY 5TH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION……YOU MUST DO IT BY WEDNESDAY…..Get the paperwork from your local election office. You will also have another opportunity to switch parties in the Spring, FOR THE DELAWARE STATE PRIMARY IN SEPTEMBER.
The second enrollment opportunity will be from Febrary 6th through March 31st.
Apparently, only Delaware and New York have such tight deadlines….I WONDER IF IT ALL DOESN’T COME FROM “BACK IN THE DAY”, WHEN THEY REALLY DIDN’T WANT TO GIVE PEOPLE A CHANCE TO CHANGE PARTIES.

I believe that the party affiliation switch may be more important in the Delaware elections now, than ever before; especially for the Governor’s election.
REMEMBER…BY WEDNESDAY, YOU MUST HAVE THE PARTY SWITCH PAPERWORK DONE FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY FEBRUARY 5, 2008.

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM A GOVERNOR?

October 29, 2007

For the last thirty years I have been reading letters to the editor, oped pieces, attending community meetings, listening to radio talk show callers, and so on and so forth.   Everybody has a gripe; and most of the gripes are legitimate..but the vast majority of people  are merely  rehashing the things that governors have done incorrectly.  We feign surprise when a governor screws up. We’re outraged, infuriated, upset, horrified, etc., etc., etc..  We really should be angry, outraged, upset, and disgusted with ourselves.

First; why aren’t we voting?  Too few people even bother to have a say.  Second; why don’t we take  the time and energy to make sure that the candidates actually know and understand what it is that we expect of them, correction;  what we should DEMAND of them?

We don’t have a clear picture in our own minds about what we really want.  And if we don’t even know what we want, we should not be bitching and complaining when we don’t get it.  We never give them any mandates during their campaigns. Unless we do that, we will just have to take what they decide they want to give us…and it will NOT what we want, but what THEY want.  If we don’t get actively involved, candidates have no fear of us, because they are in charge, and we are merely the  recipients of their ineffectiveness.   For the most part, we do a take-off on that old phrase: I can’t define porn, but I sure know it when I see it”. Well, in this case, we can’t define what constitutes an bad governor, but we sure recognize one after he or she screws up.  Then, of course, we spend a lot of time complaining about it.    As long as we don’t define what we want, we will never get it.

When you applied for, and got a job, one of the first things that a boss and/or, a supervisor did, was to tell you exactly what the job entailed and exactly how they wanted you  to do the job.  DO THE SAME FOR POLITICAL CANDIDATES.

THE CAMPAIGN IS THE CANDIDATE’S JOB APPLICATION.  They want to work for us.  So we had better tell them how we want the job done.  USE THE BLOGS, THE RADIO SHOWS, THE LETTERS TO EDITOR, YOUR VOCAL INPUT AT THE CAMPAIGN MEETINGS THEY ATTEND, AND AT THE DEBATES THEY ARE IN.  Use every opportunity to educate them about their responsibility to YOU, the boss.

Let’s take a little straw poll of what your demands are for the next governor.  I WILL SEND THEM YOUR DEMANDS THE PROBABLY CANDIDATES:  LT. GOVERNOR CARNEY/  STATE TREASURER JACK MARKELL/  MIKE PROTACK AND VERY PROBABLY ALAN LEVIN.  You will  note that I did NOT include their political parties….for once, just once, let’s forget parties and talk people…the quality of their character; not their damn political party affiliation.  What do you want to see accomplished by the next governor, on one or more of these areas:

EDUCATION/   CRIME/   HEALTH  CARE/ ENERGY/

LEGISLATIVE REFORM/ WASTE IN GOVERNMENT/

TAXES/  GIVING TOO MUCH TO CORPORATIONS/

UTILITIES COSTS/ AND ANYTHING ELSE/ REFERENDUM/ OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL

Active governors can do a tremendous amount of good, or bad, or they can lay back and do nothing.  IT’S ACTUALLY UP TO YOU TO DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT.

I repeat….I will get your responses to all the candidates, and I’m sure you will get responses from them..DEMAND one!

DO YOU SHARE MY VIEW THAT THIS ELECTION WILL BE ONE OF SIGNIFICANT CHANGE?

October 25, 2007

I really believe that, for the first time in many years here in Delaware, and even nationwide, we are going to see a huge growth in the number of people who will make their choice of candidates based on the quality of the candidate character, not on the party color, (red or blue)”. Did I just steal that phrase
“quality of character …not color…..? I think I might have heard it somewhere before.

Why? do I smell real change in Delaware’s voting patterns and in other places too? Think about it. A 36 year old man born in India, with off-white skin color, and a Republican at that, won the governor’s race in Louisiana this week. In Boston, Tsongas a very famous name, in a normally huge dem district wins by only 5%…that was incredible! In Delaware we have Biden losing badly as a “favorite son” candidate. In other words, just because he’s our home grown boy, he is ranking zippo in voting polls in his own State. People are beginning to think, rather than just vote by rote.

People are not falling in line because “we have always done it that way.”

We also have another first…the normal democratic machine which usually just points to some hack and says, “Hey, it’s your turn” is not getting away with it this time. No more stuff like, “Just do what you are told, no primary, wait your turn, and we’ll get you there when we want to.” No, not this time.

Jack Markell has said “no” to a bundle of twisted offers to fall in line under the direction of democratic party bigwigs, even from the Washington bigshots who threw all kinds of deals at him; if only he doesn’t primary Carney. One plan was to have him run for Lt. Gov, with promises of more power than any Lt. Gov ever had in the past, in our regressive State.

If he agreed to that deal, Matt Den would pull out voluntarily from Lt. Gov race; but Blunt, the other candidate, wouldn’t budge. It’s my opinion that Blunt WILL pull out, provided he gets a promise of a nice little job with a nice big state salary. That surprises me because, how little could he do any more than the little he does now in some trumpted up do-little job he shows up for, with about a one hundred thou salary attached.? He will pull out eventually, but he has to play the game of pulling out when it’s too late for the Denn deal. Jack Markell is too straight a shooter to play their game.

You see, Jack Markell knows he is smarter and more positively progressive than Carney. And he can’t stand the thought of working below somebody that you are better than. I can certainly identify with what it is like working with a boss I was better than; I did work with Rick Jensen every day, you know. What a nightmare!

So, a primary WILL hurt the Dems, as a machine, but it helps the rest of us as individuals. It could produce a Republican win for the governor’s seat; which I hope is Alan Levin, should he decide to run. All these tangled scenarios help us to make good choices, because we will actually HAVE choices this time.

By the way, there is an interesting little historical angle here that really could put a Republican in the Governor’s chair. It goes like this…and it all happened during the 30 years that I have been here.

About every 14 to 16 years the lazy, slow-motion Dems yield just enough scandals that move people to change the rules of the game. In the late seventies Pete duPont took advantage of Democratic screwups and won. About 12 years after that, Mike Castle got in because Dems got fat, sloppy and contented and lost the governorship.

Now, 16 years later, there have been such outrageous ass-backwards messes that an Alan Levin could come in with credible, much needed promised changes, which coincides with policies we have been begging for, provided he runs of course. In every Republican reign as governor they have had no high profile problems, and they left legacies of positive change. That’s true of Pete duPont and Mike Castle….why not an Alan Levin? It could and should happen, in my personal view.

The key to the change is for YOU, the real change-makers, to keep the key issues in front of these guys, from both parties.

Haven’t we pretty much settled on: OPEN GOVERNENT/ INSPECTOR GENERAL POSITION/ FEWER SCHOOL DISTRICTS/ LESS LOBBYIST INFLUENCE/ NO EMINENT DOMAIN/ BETTER DISTRICTING To STOP SO MANY ENCUMBENTS FROM ALWAYS WINNING/ INITIATIVE AND REFERENDUM/ WIND ALTERNATIVE ENERGY/ OPENING ALL LEGISLATIVE BILLS FOR DEBATE AND VOTE/ HEALTH CARE….OH GOD, YES, HEALTH CARE.

If you constantly keep these guys forced to focus on those issues, it really could happen…MEANINGFUL POSITIVE CHANGE. We do know some things now; Carney is in favor of eminent domain…he likes taking peoples’ property at will/ he is dead set against Inspector General/ not really a fan of new modes of open government, he’s against referendum, likes the present lobbyist power position.

Jack Markell is kind of hovering in the air around those issues, but not quite decided on where to land yet. My personal choice is pretty clear on all of the above mentioned issues, according to his recent speeches, and during a two hour radio show. When asked about all those issues by both callers and talk show hosts, Alan Levin agreed to them all.

SO HERE IS THE QUESTION OF THE DAY….CAN YOU SAY RIGHT NOW THAT YOU ARE AT LEAST WILLING TO SHED STRAIGHT PARTY AFFILIATION, TO VOTE FOR THE BEST.PERSON….EVEN IF THAT PERSON IS NOT OF YOUR USUAL PARTY?

LET ME HEAR FROM YOU…..LET IT HANG OUT THERE FOR INSPECTION. WHADDA YA THINK?

Tomorrow, I’ll tell you why Baker can lose, and why a Tyler Nixon could win…if he does decide to run….there is some good logic.

Talk about real change. See ya later.

WHAT THE HELL IS A BLOG? WHO THE HELL ARE BLOGGERS, AND WHY AM I EVEN INVOLVED??

October 22, 2007

Yeah, it’s me, GERRY FULCHER. I decided to try this blog stuff.
I thought I would use my first blog by see if I can’t piss off the other bloggers. Dont worry, down the line I will provide you with the true, word-for-word, person to person, inside facts, about the WDEL thing; including the appropriate descriptive adjectives attached to all parties involved, But, for now, let’s talk blogs and bloggers.

A BLOG IS EQUIVALENT TO A WRITER’S FART. A blog is an offensive “dropping” in the real word of writing. Some bloggers think that they ARE writers. But they aren’t. To be a Writer, you have to survive a series of arduous experiences, and some discouraging setbacks. Just because you know how to work a keyboard, and do fancy computer stuff, you are not automarically a Writer. Check it out…a Writer has to meet the qualifications of having been published in respected publications (including national magazines) and actually have gotten paid for writing. I notice that some local bloggers are calling themselves Writers. With the exception of Celia Cohen and myself, the bloggers that I know in Delaware are people who perhaps “like to write”, or, who may have a “hobby of writing”, and they can even call themselves “wannabe Writers”, but until their work has been judged worthy of national readership attention, and have a check to prove it….they are not WRITERS.

Ok Fulcher, where the hell do you get off calling yourself a Writer? Glad you asked; I’ve been published in, and paid by: TV Guide/ Nation’s Business/ Industry Week/ Delaware Today/ Employee Assistance Magazine/ Human Resources Professional/ Security Management Magazine/ Focus Business Journal/ Barrister Magazine (American Bar Association). Philadelphia Inquirer/ Cleveland Plain Dealer/. I discount several pieces I did back in the eighties for the News Journal, because those cheap bastards don’t pay. I’ve written about employee relations, sports, education, management styles, criminal justice system reform, criminal trial techniques, and of course, gambling. Another absolute requirement for being a Writer, is that when you write for REAL publications (not just for your own computer), you had better be prepared for the dreaded phone call from the magazine’s “FACT CHECKER”. A real Writer has to endure and pass the FACT CHECKER’S barriers before the article hits the street.

If Delaware Bloggers had to undergo a FACT CHECKER like that, there would probably be no Bloggers in this State. But, dont worry there is still hope for you bloggers. For years I’ve been teaching a course for Freelance Writers. “HOW TO BE A REGULARLY PUBLISHED AND PAID FREELANCE WRITER. If you bloggers ask me nicely, I’ll invite you to my next course. Want a good reference?
JOHN KOWALKO took the course. By the way, he is a hell of a writer…better than me; but he refuses to take the time to be a reguarly paid freelance writer.

B R I E F  T I M E O U T……

YOU KNOW THE NAME CHARLES POTTER, RIGHT?

He’s a City Councilman. He’s also the only City politician, who opposes eminent domain. Well, Charlles and his son and two close associates of his have a new business. Charles Potter Jr., Charles Potter III, Greg Collins Sr., Greg Collins Jr. have started a new local service business:

MORTGAGES AND FINANCIAL SERVICES
Property Purchases/ 100% Financing/ No “Doc” Loans/ Stated Income-Assets/ Fixed Adjustable Rates/ Jumbo Loans/ High Debt/ Income Ratio/ Refinances/ Debt Consolidation/ Chapter 13-BuyOuts
They do it ALL. GIVE THEM A CALL. THEIR EXPERIENCE, EXPERTISE AND PERSONAL HANDS-ON APPROACH IS JUST RIGHT. 9 9 5 – 2 1 1 5. THEY GET APPROVALS. 9 9 5 – 2 1 1 5

Back To blogging:
Might as well continue on this track of pissing off Bloggers.
Call me the anti-blogger blogger. Bloggers apparently have become self-appointed gatekeepers of society’s moral values. They take great pride in WATCHING the rest of us, and subjectively reporting on our foibles and moral turpitude..
Ahhh, but who is watching the watchers? Who gets to examine the bloggers’ ability (or lack of same), their experience, their methods of gathering their information, their own hidden agendas for interpreting what they find and how they write it? If they can watch and interpret the rest of us, why can’t I watch and interpret them, right?

This BLOG stuff is really kind of interesting. The word itself is strange, and some of the people who do it are even stranger. One thing is for sure, people who blog are getting way too much respect from blog readers. If these bloggers merely said in a conversation over a cup of coffee, what they write, no one would pay any attention to them…but because they write it somewhere, all of a sudden it’s “important”? I don’t think so. It’s merely thier private iinterpretation of what they saw, heard, guessed, or things told to them by some third party; whom we don’t know.

Perhaps we have better do some fact checking right NOW. I’ve decided to present some possible interpretations of the word BLOG. Let’s see what some of the possibilities are for the meaning.

Maybe the letters B L O G stand for:
Big Losers Offering Guesses/ Bullshit Lines Of Gossip/
Blowhards’ Lamebrain Offensive Gibberish/ Bellocose Liberals Offending Government/ Gerry’s Long Overdue Gallantry/
Take your choice.

Actually, I’m about to suggest that we follow the trend of making nouns into verbs and adjectives. What do you think.
“Go blog yourself”……”You’re a bloggin’ pain the ass”….I’ll knock your bloggin’ head off”….”You are so bloggin’ stupid”…
“Oh yeah, blog you too”….”Get lost mother-blogger”
“Hey, I’m not so sure I even want to be bloggin’ blogger”.
