TALK ABOUT A GROUP THAT GETS THINGS DONE

THE A. PHILIP RANDLPH INSTITUTE—ever hear of them?
THEY HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHING THINGS WHICH YOU MAY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT…AND NOW YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO HELP THEM CONTINUE THEIR EFFORTS WHICH MAKE YOUR LIFE BETTER. Help them celebrate by attending their annual dinner/dance.
THEY ACTUALLY DO WHAT MANY OF US ONLY TALK ABOUT DOING……I never heard of them until about 2 years ago when sly John Flaherty called me one Saturday morning and said,
“Come offer to Angelo’s on Scott and Gilpin…I’ll buy you breakfast”. Hell, yeah, I’ll go anywhere for a free breakfast. After breadkfast he hits me with, “Oh, by the way. I’m going to a meeting on the east side. Come with me”.
He was riding his bike and I was walking…and I mean walking. How does 200 E. Claymont street sound for a mid-morning walk?

I entered the the union hall, and the place was mostly filled with people of a darker skin color than me; spinkled with some whitie types like myself. State legislators were there; city officials, a county councilperson or two; ministers, Matt Denn is a regular; but most importantly, the place was packed with people representing every neighborhood in northern Delaware…people dressed in saturday casuals, or working clothes like me.
What makes this group different from any other community gathering I’ve ever attended?
THESE PEOPLE GO IT GOIN’ ONE….WHEN IT COMES TO ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHING THINGS, which I’ve come to know and understand, and appreciate over the last few years.
Try just these samples:
We are getting Sunday bus service; did you know that? Why?
Because two guys from the A. Philip Randolph Institute,
Mark Brunswick and Scott Spence worked their butts off by three years of digging, and pushing and surveying and making a pain in the ass of themselves as they literally forced the system to give us buses on Sunday. We used to be the only city of this size without Sunday bus service, but now we got it.Thanks APRI.

APRI IS A TOTALLY VOLUNTEER AGENCY…EVERYBODY DOES WHAT THEY DO FOR NOTHING/ NADA/ ZILCH/ ZIP/ ZERO.
THEY DO WHAT THEY DO OUT OF GENUINE CONCERN FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEEDS, AND THEY ARE REAL NEEDS: (from Sunday bus service to health care, to prison reform, and more).

They have a grassroots lobbyist, Mark Brunswick, who takes all the concerns of statewide importance to Dover, and gently, but firmly forces the PEOPLES’ CONCERNS down legislators’ throats.
There were the first grassroots group to push for single payer health care for all/
They spearheaded the movement to restore felons’ rights/
Their education efforts are very productive and realistic; they’ll get a high school in Wilmington; only city our size without one/
their criminal justice system reform people are working hard/
youth crime prevention is a priority they are dealing with/
You name it and they are into it/
THESE ARE PEOPLE YOU’LL WANT TO GET TO KNOW…
AND HERE’S HOW YOU CAN DO IT.

ATTEND THEIR YEARLY DINNER/DANCE/ FRIDAY, FEB.22nd/ 6PM
IT’S AT THE IBEW UNION HALL—814 BASIN RD. NEW CASTLE.

It’s $75–checks payable to APRI DELAWARE CHAPTER
Mail to Peaches Whalen, President 309 W. 24th St. WILM, 19802

It’s worth the price just to meet Peaches, herself. She does all the coordinating for the most effective human service consortium I’ve ever witnessed in my 71 years of life. GET AQUAINTED AT THIS SATURDAY’S MONTHLY MEETING; 10AM 200 CLAYMONT ST. The meetings are from 10am till noon, and Peaches makes sure in it not 12:01…it’s noon!
It’s an opportunity to get excited by people who do very important things just for the pure love for their fellow men and women.

Hmmm….sounds interesting…but I don’t like contributing to what I presume will be an arm or ancillary of left wing causes…I’d rather contribute to Family Radio…now that’s really helping humanity where we need it first. In our souls…and all the rest flows from that…but I do love humanity so…even humanity as hateful and belligerent as you Gerry

Yea! for APRI and its worthy founder and (locally) a very worthy group until they selected to honor Sam Lathem……I think there are others around with cleaner hands who could and should be recognized for their good work.

    Just saying…………

AFL-CIO, National supports single payer, universal health care. Many of our unions leaders did too for awhile…now they seemed to have turned on the Carneys, Markells, Denns and others who have health care plans that are not single payer…and not universal (although they use the buzz words so they can fool people).

Is it any wonder the politicans get away with what they do, when they can talk to a few leaders and stop them from doing what they no in their hearts and souls is the right thing to do…just sayin

    LITTLE BIRDIE….
I’m inclined to agree with you about half of the two who are being honored.
Sally of Pacem in Terra has done a tremendous amount of good in this community….so you now know which half of the two I agree with.
I wonder about the other honoring…..there are lots of people in this community who deserve honor and praise, and most of them are NOT holding elected or appointed official positions…..most of the real helpers of any community are regular people with incredible self-sacrificing dedication……more of them should be honored, instead of the cabal of officials who always seem to feted for honor on every occasion.
