I KNOW IT’S TOO LATE; BUT IT’S STILL A GOOD IDEA, AND CERTAINLY WORTH CONSIDERING FOR THE FUTURE

KAREN PETERSON SHOULD HAVE MADE IT A THREE WAY PRIMARY AGAINST BOTH MARKELL AND CARNEY. SHE WOULD HAVE WON THE DAMN THING.   Yes, I’m convinced of it. THINK ABOUT IT—-who among the three of them has the best reputation?  Who has had the most insightful perspective about the most popular issues we are always talking about?   WHO WOULD BETTER REPRESENT THE KINDS OF DRASTIC CHANGES WE HAVE ALL BEEN CRAVING FOR? When it comes to effectiveness, here is something you probably didnt know:
KAREN PETERSON HAS A 100% SUCCESS RATE WITH ALL HER BILLS WHICH GET TO THE FLOOR. THEY ALL PASS.  ONE HUNDRED PERCENT!

She also has never lost a committee vote with her bills. The only bills she loses, so to speak, is when they bury her bills in a desk, and they never get out for a debate and a vote. That is the highest percent of any other state legislator. THAT’ S IMPORTANT!
If Karen Peterson can be so successful while fighting on
that contentious battlefield of senate caucuses, and at
rancorous committee hearings, and with bipartician squabling,
HOW MUCH MORE SUCCESSFULL WOULD SHE BE AS THE GOV?

She would use the VETO too, make no mistake about that.  She doesn’t yield to party pressure now, even from her own party, so her vetos would succeed.  Her present rate of success is only possible because she has credibility, and successfully cooperates with all factions, both paties, pressure groups, different viewpoints, etc..
IN OTHER WORDS…..WHO HAS ALL THE QUALITIES THAT WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED, MOST EFFECTIVE AND MOST REFORMING.

I once asked her why she would not run of Lt. Governor. She shot back, “The only thing worse than sitting in that senate room and having only one vote, is to be forced to sit in that senate sit, and have NO vote”. Good response, I had not comeback for her.

DANGER: she is far from old, but let’s face it, one or two more terms and she could retire. MAKE IT A POINT TO LET HER KNOW YOU WOULD NOT WANT HER TO RETIRE. WE NEED HER, AND OTHERS LIKE HER, TO MAKE THIS GOVERNMENT RUN—ACTAULLY RUN FOR THE PEOPLE.
HER’S AN IDEA. We often talk about how the senate leaders actually control what happens and what doesn’t happen…..The position with the REAL power in the senate is the MAJORITY PROTEM JOB. McDowell used to have it…and Tony DeLuca has it now….that kind of says it all, doesn’t it?
KAREN PETERSON WOULD DO ONE HELL OF A JOB AS PROTEM IN THE MAJORITY PARTY. Picture it—no bills locked in the desks/ no committee funerals for bills just becasue legislators don’t like them/ everything decided on its merits, instead of being decided by hidden agendas by slected legislators, lobbyists, pressure groups and the like.
BOTTOM LINE….KAREN PETERSON IS TOO LATE TO ENTER THE PRIMARY FOR GOVERNOR/ SHE HAS NO DESIRE TO LT. GOVERNOR/ BUT I HAVE A GUT FEELING THAT SHE WOULD LOVE TO REFORM THE ENTIRE SENATE BY BEING AN EFFECTIVE SENATE PROTEM….THAT’S WHERE THE
DAY-TO-DAY POWER IS.

MAKE IT A POINT TO ENCOURAGE HER, BY MAIL, EMAIL, or PHONE, AND AFTER THAT, DEMAND THAT YOUR OWN SENATOR VOTES HER INTO THAT OFFICE WHEN THE SENATE OPENS IN 2008. Tell you senator that unless they promise to do that now, you will vote for them in November.

PLEASE DO IT, FOLKS, IT MAKE SENSE….REALLY GOOD SENSE.

LEGISLATIVE FLASH: Remember when the Democratic Party entered Bruce Ennis to replace Senator Vaughn? Remember when we all, myself included, said to ourselves; “OH CRAP, Bruce Ennis is going to be nothing but a younger, more healthy Jim Vaughn, who needs that”? WE WERE ALL WRONG–MYSELF INCLUDED. According to the good-guys and good-women legislators, BRUCE ENNIS IS REALLY MORE IN STEP WITH THE RIGHT IDEAS, AND MAKING THE RIGHT VOTES ON THE RIGHT ISSUES, than we ever imagined. He’s become one of the good guys….and that means that he probably was a good guy before he got there. Sorry I misjudged you, Senator Ennis. And thanks for your service in the Legislature. By the way, Bruce….be sure to vote for Karen Peterson for the ProTem job, OK?

BS….she is not the great progressive she claims to be. If she were she would have embraced single payer health care. embraced Inspector General, embraced campaign finance reform, and she would have never used “herself” as the only supporter of the FOIA. FOIA is embraced by people of all parties, and many many people who are not in the democrat party. If FOIA had been marketed as a “good government bill”, and not known as a “karen peterson bill”, it would have passed. Republicans are not going to suppor a “peterson” bill because she is a democrat. They might have signed on, if was a good government, non partisan bill.

  2. Gerry Fulcher Says:

HOW TRULY SAD, ANON: How many things can you be wrong about with regard to Karen Petrson’s value as a public figure? Twenty eight years ago she opned County Government, when she was County Council President….New Castle County government has never been better than it was during her term.

Foia: it was the people’s bill ( lot of people talked, and talked and talked, …but she is ONLY one who didn’t just talk about it SHE DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT BY CREATING THE BILL.

She has the best version of any of the FOIA bills. It merely takes the last statement out of the present law which says, “The state legislature is not a public body” Take that sentence out, and you have the perfect FOIA bill. Others just talked…she DID something.

I hate to tell you this, but how wrong can you be…MORE REPUBLICANS SIGNED ON HER FOIA BILL THAN DEMOCRATS DID. How do I know? BECAUSE I WAS THE ONE WHO TOOK THE PETITION AROUND PERSONALLY AND HAD THE PEOPLE SIGN. Copeland, Bonini, Corrnor, Sorenson, Coutier, (that’s 5) The only dems who signed on were Peterson, Sokola, and McBride….I believe Bunting Joined now….how freakin’ wrong can you be? Yes, she does not sign on to single payer health…so let’s shoot hernow , right?
She DOES embrace Inspector General (so you are wrong again).

As for cooperating with both sides of the political picture….let me say it one more time….100% OF THE HER BILLS WHICH GET TO THE FLOOR SUCCEED….FIND ME ONE OTHER LEGISLATOR WITH THAT KIND OF RECORD. Her enemies know that she is so popular with legislators that they have to hide her bills from seing the light of day, as the only way to keep he down. So please, if you hate her because she doesn’t support EVERY SINGLE THING YOU WANT HER TO, DON’T LIE TO MAKE YOUR POINT ABOUT HER TRUE WORTH BY TRYING TO TRICK PEOPLE INTO BELIEVING YOUR LIES ABOUT HER…
THERE IS TOO MUCH DOCUMENTATION TO PROVE OTHERWISE.

  3. Tyler Nixon Says:

To Delaware’s Democrat Party leadership FOIA stands for “F**k Off, In Advance”.

  4. Joan Marie Ritter Deaver Says:

I was a lobbyist in Dover for a non-profit called Citizens for a Better Sussex, and I would like to confirm the following,
…” BRUCE ENNIS IS REALLY MORE IN STEP WITH THE RIGHT IDEAS, AND MAKING THE RIGHT VOTES ON THE RIGHT ISSUES, than we ever imagined.”…
    Absolutely right.

  5. Gerry Fulcher Says:

JOAN MARIE: thanks for the firsthand insight. In your position, you would know better than the rest of us…..We were so upset with the way they operate in politicsin Dover, that we assumed that if the party wanted a replacement for Vaughn, that they would put in a Vaughn-alike substitute.
I’m gald we were wrong. According to Karen Peterson, Bruce is a different cut, and is doing a good job…and now YOU confirmed it.

Let me know your insight about the John Adkins vs Hastings race. I spoke to John before his “incidents” and I didn’t like what I heard. I did every thing I could to push for his demise….BUT, I have spoken to him more recently….he made all the appropriate admissions…seems to “get it” now…and I saw real remorse and a desire to make amends by being a positive asset as a legislator again…..I find myself hoping that he wins…..WHAT’S YOUR TAKE, Mrs. Deaver?

  6. Joan Marie Ritter Deaver Says:

Gerry, both parties are very involved in this race because it may determine which party controls the House of Representatives next year.
I am a Dem running for the 3rd district seat on the Sussex County Council.
The 41st state rep district includes manufactured home parks and other homes on leased land such as Baywood.
It includes some of the most impaired inland bays; quiet small towns and a lot of farmland.
I appreciate taht Greg Hastings supported the Bluewater Wind Farm, but I am not happy with some of his votes on other issues in the General Assembly.
On the other hand Greg’s name is on HCR 68 & HCR 70 about the Indian River Power Plant. These are only resolutions, but it’s a good start and I support them.
So I will be cheering for the candidate who supports the
    Bluewater Wind Farm,
    managed growth,
    manufactured homeowners rights,
septic regulation, buffers on new development around the bays and
farmland preservation. (This year Sussex failed to send any farms to the State for preservation.)
I am for the candidate who will stand up for directing new communities to areas where the state will build roads and schools and to limit growth in rural, outlying areas.
PS: On Thur. I attended a P&Z Commission hearing for Mr. & Mrs. Hastings’ subdivision -a plan that neighbors said would be a departure from surrounding farms.
It seems that Hastings’ will not ask for a forested buffer waiver but there is an issue of a tax ditch very near the property.
I hope they and their neighbors come to an agreement; when I left the hearing was pretty heated.
